Sierra Foothills
Domaine de la Terre Rouge (Easton and Terre Rouge)
I think it is safe to say that Domaine de la Terre Rouge is THE preeminent winery in the Sierra Foothills. It can be viewed as two wineries in one – the Terre Rouge line is made up of Rhone-style wines while the Easton wines are comprised of non-Rhone varietals and more traditional grapes such as Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Bill Easton, President and Winemaker, is one of the true pioneers in the Sierra Foothills wine industry, as well as being one of the original members of the “Rhone Rangers”. His handcrafted wines express both power and finesse and they are often compared to stylish European bottlings. They are rich and finely balanced with ripe flavors and beautiful vineyard character.
Lava Cap Winery
Lava Cap Winery takes its name from the volcanic rocks that cap the ridges where the vineyards are located ranging in elevation from 2,300 to 2,800 feet. Located in El Dorado County in the Sierra Foothills of California, Lava Cap specializes in growing top-notch Bordeaux, Rhone and Italian varietals. With 120 acres of prime grape growing land, the Jones family understands the importance of close proximity to the vineyards in order to allow immediate processing at optimal ripeness during harvest. This is truly a family affair with father, David Jones, overseeing the works, son Charlie Jones managing the vineyard and other son, Tom Jones, making the wine. David Jones was once head of the US Geological Survey for twenty years, so he knows the significance of unique site selection.
